Birds of Corconne

Rapace-corconne0031k1 Corconne is a small village in the Gard (30) department, 30 km north of Montpellier, 34 km west of Nîmes [map]. We visited the village yesterday, drawn by the loop hike up through a rift in the cliffs, past the Pont du Hasard and up past the ruins of an ancient castle.

Rapace-corconne0007k1 A side trip at the top of  the rift took us out to a chapel, actually coverted from the castle's ancient guard quarters and hence very sturdily constructed of emensely thick stone walls.

Rapace-corconne0025k1 Located at the top of a jutting cliff overlooking the village of Corconne (and the rest of the world below), the site is isolated. Except for us (the solo Beyond hiker) and, as it turned out, a local falconer there to fly one of his new trainees.
